Finding Hope in the New Year

There’s something magical about New Year’s. There is a feeling that has nothing to do with the glitter of party lights or the boom of fireworks and an atmosphere alive with expectations unrelated to presents or Santa Claus.

It all comes down to one thing: New Year’s means new beginnings and second chances. As a time of reflection, reevaluation and resolution, New Year’s is a time of hope and change. This is the magic of January 1st.

A Time of Reflection

January 1st is a new chapter of your life story. You cannot change the events that happened in the past, but you can choose what will happen in the future. As a time of reflection, New Year’s is a time to think about how you want your story to end.

Remember, no matter how broken we are, no matter where we live or what we look like right now, everybody has a shot at recovery and restoration. Addiction and hardship may dominate the earlier chapters of your life, but it doesn’t have to be the ending.

A Time of Reevaluation

We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives…not looking for flaws, but for potential.” ― Ellen Goodman

What is your potential? What can you do with the time that is given you? What can you write in the next few pages of life?

Don’t underestimate the power of the human potential or undermine your abilities—as a person and as an author. Whether it’s staying sober or getting sober, the possibility of recovery still exists. As long as we are breathing, we all have the ability to achieve change.

“You know, there’s always hope as long as you are breathing, and there’s hope that you can come in and have a new life.” -Amy, Duffy’s Counselor

A Time of Resolution

New Year’s resolutions aren’t just about gym memberships and smoking cessation programs. The principle behind resolutions is that it forces us to set goals, to envision what could be, and make the decision to try.

Make New Year’s goals. Dig within, and discover what you would like to have happen in your life this year. This helps you do your part. It is an affirmation that you’re interested in fully living life in the year to come.” -Melody Beattie

So ask yourself:

  • What would you like to happen in your life this year?
  • What would you like to accomplish?
  • What would you like to see happen in your family life?
  • What decision would you like to make?

All change starts with a decision to try. Are you willing to make it?

Duffy’s Resolution

Forty-seven years ago, Gene Duffy made a resolution to help addicts and their families affected by the disease of addiction. That resolution resulted in the founding of Duffy’s Napa Valley Rehab and the recovery of over 36,000 addicts and alcoholics.

In 2014, our resolution still stands today. We are still “a family business for a family problem.” We still love to see the transformation of human life, and we still believe in the beauty of the human potential and the ability to achieve change. Our goal is to help addicts and alcoholics in Northern California and around the world achieve this transformation and assist them towards achieving lasting sobriety. And we would count it a privilege to help you.
