Zohydro News Update: New Delay

zohydro_news_update_2013.jpg
I was really hoping that the next time I blogged about Zohydro, it would be to announce the fate of this much-publicized painkiller—whether it had been approved or rejected by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I certainly did not anticipate writing how Zohydro’s approval date has been pushed back yet again. But it’s true. Originally scheduled for March 1, a press release from late last month announced that the FDA needed a few more weeks to decide. The FDA did not provide any reason for the possible delay, except for saying that the delay ... Read More →

Living out the 12th Step The twelfth step in Alcoholics Anonymous says, “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” From the beginning, Gene Duffy, our founder, embraced this twelfth step, sharing his story of hope many times and placing the slogan, “Together they shared their experience, strength, and hope” on Duffy’s welcome sign. Thankfully, Gene’s son wanted to capture his father’s story with his camcorder, so today, we can ... Read More →

Our founder, Gene Duffy is a living legend, a daily inspiration, and our all-time favorite person to quote. Not long after he became sober, Gene dedicated himself to helping others find freedom and recovery (read Gene's story). Patrick, a Duffy’s counselor, said, “What I know about Gene Duffy is that he was absolutely passionate about helping alcoholics and addicts who were suffering.” Patrick is right: of all who knew Gene, they will remember his fiery, contagious, and unrelenting passion. But why did he care so much? Below is an excerpt from Gene's reasons for ... Read More →

MomsRecoveringFromAddiction.jpg
She’s on call virtually all day, every day. She does the impossible. She’s the real superhero. We thank her for giving us life, for caring for us—changing endless diapers, bandaging our cuts—and for being the one person who never stopped worrying about us. But, who’s always there to worry about her? Who’s there to notice her struggle? According to ... Read More →

Too often, people are quick to judge and assume the worst in a person that has difficulties—which we all have difficulties at some point in our lives. But, imagine a world in which people had compassion for others who are struggling rather than judging them. A Model of Compassion A classic ... Read More →

Should I Pressure My Loved One Into Rehab?

should__I_force_an_addict_to_treatment.jpg
Question: Should I pressure someone struggling with an alcohol or drug addiction into rehab? Do people who are forced into treatment get anything out of it? Answer: Yes, and yes. People who are not initially willing or ready to go into treatment have the same chance of recovery as those who come voluntarily to treatment. For years, conventional wisdom has stated otherwise: that treatment will work only for those who seek it. However, very few addicts seek treatment on their own. The nature of addiction makes it nearly impossible for the dependent person to admit or even recognize that he ... Read More →
