Sacramento Restaurant Spikes Desserts with Weed

It seems like the recently failed marijuana legalization did nothing to dampen the efforts of weed dealers as they continue to find creative ways around the law enforcement. The latest one discovered this morning disguises itself behind America’s most beloved foods: desserts.

Farmer’s Daughter restaurant right here in northern California (Sacramento) seemed like your typical dining establishment until dessert time–when patrons knew to ask for the house “baked goods.” Yep, these turned out to be all kinds of treats (candy and pastries) spiked with cannabis!

According to the Sacramento Bee, searches uncovered 80 pounds of marijuana in a backroom dispensary. Regular customers may have suspected that this restaurant might have been a clever front for a separate business. One customer said:

“Why are there so many cameras? Why are random people coming in and going to a backroom that is locked? Each time we have come we are the only ones eating and it is during lunch hour. However many people come in, are let into the backroom, are in there for about 5 to 10 minutes, then leave. Is this place a front for some other type of operations running behind closed doors?”

Indeed, it was.

A Little About Marijuana

Marijuana (or weed) has the distinction of being the most abused illicit drug in the United States. The active ingredient in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which acts upon cannabinoid receptors in the brain. Usually, the THC affects areas of the brain that have the most receptors–like areas that control perception, thinking, pleasure and coordination. Therefore, typical side effects of marijuana include

  • lack of problem solving
  • distored perception
  • lack of coordination

According to NIDA (National Institute Drug Abuse), researches have learned that the effects of marijuana on chronic users can last days or weeks after the initial dose wears off.

As with any drug, it is possible to get addicted to marijuana. People who take the drug as young adults or teens or those who take the drug daily are more susceptible to a marijuana addiction.

NIDA also reports that some studies “associate workers’ marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers’ compensation claims, and job turnover.” At Duffy’s, we understand how difficult it can be to break the cycle of addiction, don’t wait until marijuana takes over your life–choose recovery today.
