Running Towards a Lasting Recovery

When you think of the things that influence your recovery, you’re probably thinking of supportive friends, regular 12-step meetings, and a good rehab program. You usually don’t think about running, right?

But running is considered one of the most beneficial activities to do during recovery and is a favorite activity of those in recovery–and here at Duffys, we make sure you have time in the schedule for some regular exercise. Check out what they say:

Cathy’s Testimony

In her blog, How Running Promotes Long-Term Recovery, Cathy explains why running has such a positive effect on her recovery. She says,

I have enjoyed the few races that I participated in, but for me running is so much more than that. It’s a way to keep my mind and body strong. It makes me feel calm and relaxed. For several hours after running I can still feel the energy from the endorphins, or as they say, the runner’s high. My heart is pumping and my blood is flowing. It’s a healthy feeling.

Her blog also includes a list of what others are saying about running. Here are some of my favorites:

  • “When I am running, I am happy.”
  • “There is nothing like the feel of your feet against the road, the pleasure of motion produced by your own body.”
  • “The only things I don’t do more of now are watch TV, drink and waste time in general.”
  • “Running gives me all the self-confidence I will ever need.”

Back on My Feet

Hermon Blount is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict who gets up at 5:30 a.m. nearly 4 days a week to run with Back on My Feet, a non-profit organization that encourages running as a recovery tool.Running doesn’t just improve your health and provide social opportunities. Running is one of those rare sports that truly builds character. Running changes the way you view yourself. Running is a challenge that must be overcome, a journey that requires discipline and strength, an opportunity to discover your abilities. Just like recovery.

The ability to run the extra mile lies between your ears. Keep going. –bitsotruth.blogspot.com
